I personally think Death has gotten such a horrible reputation. Everyone alive is obsessed with him. Don’t get me wrong, they’re obsessed with him but they don’t necessarily welcome him. They think about him, try to delay his arrival or even cheat him. Eventually though, you can’t avoid the inevitable. Just like change and taxes, Death will come and he will come for you.
I’ve been waiting for him for quite some time now. It’s been too long, if you ask me. I’m not going to complain about that now. He’s here and that’s all that matters. I felt him come in the hospital door through my closed eyes.
“Took you long enough. Let’s get going then, shall we?”
I’m aware of my rudeness but when you’ve been waiting for as long as I am, pleasantries are least priority.
“I’m afraid I’m not here to take you. I’m merely informing you. A personal FYI since you have been waiting a while” His voice was tired, like he’s been saying the same script over and over for who knows how long. I opened my eyes and sat up. There was Death, looking like a tired intern, complete with bags under his eyes and an exasperated expression.
“You choose this costume or was it assigned?”
“It fit the scene. Look, Celine… as I was saying… I’m informing you that you have qualified to go to heaven. However…”
“Please let me finish. However, the situation in Heaven is not quite what you would expect. I didn’t expect this either.”
“Just…” hands motioning to speed up and get to the point
“Heaven’s empty. You can still go up there and wander around but it’s going to be pretty much just you and the others who chose that option.”
“What’s the other option? Down there?”
“Down there is empty too. It’s like these damn fuckers finally got on one idea and abandonment was it”
I held my head in my hands while Death sat on the empty chair next to my bed and did the same.
“So, again, what are my options here?”
“Up, down or here. For eternity or until they decide to come back. If they ever decide it.”
I think I hear him sobbing a bit. Poor guy. He was abandoned too. Worse for him because he personally knew them. I reach out for him and rested my hand on his shoulder.
“Hey… here’s an idea: Why don’t we take over?”
